International Women’s Day. Celebrating the women in cannabis
In honour of International Women’s Day 2021, we explore how to support female-focused CBD brands.
What is International Women’s Day?
IWD is an annual global celebration of women everywhere on March 8. The event has been celebrated since 1911. It recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
It also highlights the need for more action when it comes to gender inequality. The day is celebrated with a number of female-centric events, celebrations, discussions and rallies for equality. Each year, IWD normally has a theme, this year’s theme is, ‘Choose to Challenge’.
What can CBD do for women?
The CBD industry hires a lot of women, this includes businesses owners, founders, CEOs and executives. Women are rooted in every aspect of this community, from advocacy to retail to hemp cultivation.
Many women are drawn to the industry as CBD is more widely being recognised in 2021 as a natural remedy for period pain, endometriosis and symptoms of menopause.

How can I support women in the CBD industry?
Get buying!
The past year has been extra difficult for many CBD companies with lockdowns, PPE costs, furlough and the pandemic making regular working impossible. Choosing where to purchase your CBD from can make a big difference. Shopping local and making conscious buying decisions can help businesses to survive these tough times.
If you have a brand, consider gender equality in the boardroom. Listening to women’s voices can make a huge difference in approach, marketing and even product design. Why? Women are the bigger spenders when it comes to the health and wellbeing market. According to a 2020 report by Catalyst.org on buying power, women are responsible for $31.8 trillion (USD) of consumer spending. Women buy more healthcare products than men, and more medicines, accounting for over 80% of healthcare purchases and 93% of over the counter pharmaceuticals.
Here is our guide to some of the wonderful female brands and initiatives out there for you to try.

The CBD industry is more than just oils and edibles. You can support female authors, writers and journalists by reading their work and purchasing copies of their publications. Not to mention, books like this one by podcast host Mary Biles are a great source of CBD education. Books also make great gifts if you are looking to treat someone for IWD or Mother’s Day.
