CBD can now fly high after TSA alter airline policies
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has revised its stance on carrying CBD on internal US flights.
TSA policy now permits flying with CBD products and medical marijuana if ‘special instructions’ are met.
Products and medications authorised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can now be carried in both the cabin and hand luggage.
FDA-approved, hemp-derived CBD products and medications are in-keeping with the special instructions, but the TSA has emphasised that certain CBD and cannabis-infused products are still illegal under federal law.
The policy change is said to have been spurred on by increasing prescription of childhood epilepsy drug, Epidiolex.
In a recent statement to NBC news, a TSA spokesperson said:
“To avoid confusion as to whether families can travel with this drug, TSA immediately updated TSA.gov once we became aware of this issue.”
TSA officers have a responsibility to report any violations but it is still unclear how airports will determine if CBD products are in-keeping with THC limits and how the regulations will be enforced.
Some advocates have questioned why it has taken so long to amend the policy as Epidiolex was approved by the FDA almost a year ago.
Epidiolex is the only FDA-approved CBD medication for Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).
