Partnership will examine medical potential of hundreds of cannabis varieties

A new research partnership will identify and analyse the characteristics of 240 cannabis varieties for therapeutic use

The State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and Entourage Phytolab project will run for 28 months and will include research into the use of cannabis for refractory epilepsy.

The plants will be grown within three enclosed greenhouses known as phytotrons to control temperature, air humidity, light intensity and plant reaction to light known as photoperiod.

Ílio Montanari Jr., project coordinator and curator of the CPQBA Unicamp medicinal plants collection, said:

“The aim is to describe the medicinal, productive and genetic characteristics of 240 cannabis varieties, which will be cultivated in controlled growth chambers, called phytotrons.”

Caio Santos Abreu, CEO of Entourage Phytolab added that:

“People tend to think that all cannabis plants are the same, but the truth is there are many different varieties.

“Research allows us to select the most resistant, productive and appropriate for each treatment, which leads to the development of innovative drugs that are even safer, more effective and more accessible”

Newton Frateschi, executive director of Inova Unicamp stated that this is the second agreement they have made with Entourage focused on health.

“It is a clear case that research and development at the university can become a product of great impact on society”.

The site will be monitored 24 hours a day, with biometric access system and a remote camera system.
