A bottle of tincture near some lavender flowers

How do I know if my CBD is working?

CBD is huge right now and is now in everything from oils to gin. But what if you take it and nothing happens?

We examine the things to be aware of when taking CBD and how to know when it’s working.

It can take a while

CBD interacts our endocannabinoid system which plays a role in regulating a whole host of physiological processes. Some people use it as a mood-booster, others to alleviate pain and some use it for sleep.

But while CBD has many purported benefits, don’t expect it to work from the first dose.

The average person without chronic disorders taking CBD on a regular basis could notice differences with their sleep pattern or mood over a few days or weeks.

Research your dose and delivery method

Identifying the way you would like to start taking CBD is a good idea. Would you prefer to vape or try edibles? Is a tincture a better fit for your daily routine?

Once you have an idea of how you would like to take your CBD, it’s worth examining the market for a reputable source.

Be sure to read reviews and be aware of how much CBD is actually in the products you are looking at.

Of 102 products tested in one study this year, 18 had less than 80% of the CBD amount indicated, while another 46 were within 20% of the amount advertised. Thirty-eight products had more than 120% of the CBD indicated.

Speak to a doctor

It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before taking a new supplement such as CBD.

Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidance states:

As a precaution, we do not recommend CBD for people in vulnerable groups, unless under medical direction.

These include:

Pregnant and breastfeeding women

People taking any medication

While some products claim to be THC-free or contain a very small amount of the psychotropic drug, it can have a negative impact on some health conditions and can even show up in drug tests.

Finding ‘the one’

Sometimes, your CBD product might just not be the right one for you or it could just be a subpar product.

It’s worth noting what strength you have, how you are taking it, when you are taking it and also, what’s in the blend you have.

It can take a while to find the right product that matches your needs and there are a lot of products out there to try. If it’s CBD for period pain, why not try a CBD tampon or if it’s for sleep, maybe a tincture would work best?

It can also be worth changing the dose or strength of the CBD if you find it’s not enough. Starting your CBD journey with a lower strength before building it up can be the best way to find a good balance.

Stay informed

The rules, regulations, science and trials of CBD are constantly changing. It’s worth staying informed and being as up to date as possible.

Be mindful of the small stuff

It’s also worth keeping a note of the small things such as a more restful sleep, improvements in your skin, less severe period pain or an improved sense of overall wellbeing.

All of these may be signs your CBD is working.
